There are many benefits of reading with your child daily. In this blog, we will explore some of the main benefits that come from reading to your child, and doing it often.

  1. Boosts Language and Communication Skills: Reading to your child exposes them to a wide range of words and phrases that they may not encounter in everyday conversation. This can help expand their vocabulary and improve their communication skills.

  2. Develops Literacy and Cognitive Skills: Reading to your child can help improve their literacy skills, including reading, writing, and critical thinking. It can also help improve their cognitive skills, including memory, concentration, and problem-solving.

  3. Fosters a Love of Learning: When you read to your child, you open up a world of knowledge and imagination. This can foster a love of learning and creativity that can last a lifetime.

  4. Builds Stronger Bonds: Reading to your child is a great way to bond with them and strengthen your relationship. It can also provide a sense of comfort and security for your child, which is important for their emotional development.

  5. Teaches Life Lessons: Many children's books contain important life lessons that can help your child navigate the world. Reading these stories with your child can help them develop empathy and understanding of others, as well as important values like kindness and respect.

Be mindful about reading to your child. Encourage them to pick up books often. Create a love for reading and learning together. Here is a list of favorite children’s books in our house:

These are the books that have become ragged and loved within our home. We hope this will also inspire you to find new books in your family.

Dr. Suess of any kind. These are wonderful for early readers. They often have repetitive words that will allow your child to memorize sight words. Check out our favorite set here.

I Can Read! Packs: These are great because they allow your child to read multiple books about their favorite characters. I love that there are so many options to choose from, so there is always a perfect set for your child.

Bob Books: These are similar to the Easy Reader books. They are great for simple sight words and will get more challenging as your child grows. This is the first box set, it includes multiple books and a guide to show parents how to use it.

Where the Wild Things Are: So fun to act out and play this book (we made little egg shakers to use for the actions throughout the book for an extra level of excitement.)

Tickle Monster and Boogie Monster: These books are SO fun to do with little kids! They encourage them to laugh and move their bodies. You can also get a pair of “tickle monster gloves” that allow you to pretend to be the tickle monster as you read.

If I could Keep You Little: A sweet and simple board book that is fun to read to your children over an extended period of time. This is a fun one to read to little toddlers and older kids. (It will tug at a mom’s heartstrings).

Biggie Books: These are great for early readers. The words are simple and big. These books are fun to read together, especially if you read as Harold and have your child read as Piggy. So fun interacting together.

Guess How Much I Love You: A sweet story that is fun to read to your children. Include the interactions with your child, reaching up high or pointing as far as you can with your kids.

No Matter What: is my all-time favorite children’s book to read to my children. this book is a staple in my home. It has a sweet sentiment and story that goes along with explaining to children that you love them no matter what. This book is so sweet and is a great way to allow your child to see that you will be there for them, no matter what.

Each of these recommendations has a place near and dear to my heart. They are books that have helped my children read, or simply been books that we have loved together. These are my favorite books to read with and to toddlers to about 6 years old.
